How to Choose the Right Sunscreen for Your Skin Type

How to Choose the Right Sunscreen for Your Skin Type

Sunscreen Is the Most Important Skincare Product You Own

We'll say it plainly: if you're only going to use one skincare product, make it sunscreen. UV radiation is the single biggest driver of premature ageing, hyperpigmentation, and skin cancer — and in India, where UV index levels regularly hit 10 or above, daily SPF isn't optional. It's essential.

But walk into any beauty aisle and you're immediately confronted with a wall of numbers, symbols, and claims: SPF 30, SPF 50+, PA++++, broad-spectrum, physical, chemical, mineral. What does any of it actually mean — and how do you choose the right one for your skin?

This guide breaks it all down, simply and honestly.

Understanding SPF: What the Number Actually Means

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and it measures protection against UVB rays — the rays responsible for sunburn and a significant contributor to skin cancer.

  • SPF 30 blocks approximately 97% of UVB rays
  • SPF 50 blocks approximately 98% of UVB rays
  • SPF 50+ blocks 98%+ of UVB rays

The difference between SPF 30 and SPF 50 sounds small in percentage terms, but it's meaningful when you're exposed to intense Indian sun for hours. For daily use in India, SPF 50+ is the recommended minimum. SPF 30 is fine for low-exposure days (mostly indoors), but if you're spending any time outside, go higher.

One critical note: SPF only works at the right quantity. Most people apply far too little sunscreen — about 25% of the recommended amount. Use ½ teaspoon for your face and neck, and reapply every 2 hours outdoors.

Understanding PA Ratings: The UVA Protection You're Probably Ignoring

While SPF measures UVB protection, the PA rating (Protection Grade of UVA) measures protection against UVA rays. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and are the primary cause of premature ageing, tanning, and hyperpigmentation — concerns that are especially significant for Indian skin tones.

The PA system uses plus signs to indicate protection level:

  • PA+ — Some UVA protection
  • PA++ — Moderate UVA protection
  • PA+++ — High UVA protection
  • PA++++ — Extremely high UVA protection

For Indian skin, always choose PA+++ or PA++++. UVA rays are present year-round, even on cloudy days, and are the main reason skin tans and darkens with sun exposure. If your sunscreen doesn't show a PA rating, it may not offer adequate UVA protection.

The gold standard for Indian skin: SPF 50+ PA++++. This is what you'll find on all the Korean sunscreens we carry at a i c e.

Chemical vs Physical (Mineral) Sunscreen: Which Is Better?

This is one of the most common questions in skincare, and the answer is: it depends on your skin.

Chemical Sunscreens

Chemical sunscreens work by absorbing UV rays and converting them into heat, which is then released from the skin. They tend to be lightweight, invisible, and easy to layer under makeup. Most Korean sunscreens are chemical or hybrid formulas.

Best for: Oily skin, combination skin, darker skin tones (no white cast), everyday wear under makeup

Consider if: You have very sensitive or reactive skin — some chemical filters can cause irritation in a small number of people

Physical (Mineral) Sunscreens

Physical sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to physically block and reflect UV rays. They're generally considered gentler and are less likely to irritate sensitive skin. The downside: they can leave a white cast, which is more noticeable on deeper Indian skin tones.

Best for: Sensitive, reactive, or rosacea-prone skin; post-procedure skin; children

Consider if: You have a deeper skin tone — look for tinted mineral formulas to avoid white cast

Hybrid Sunscreens

Many Korean sunscreens combine both approaches — offering the skin-friendliness of mineral filters with the lightweight finish of chemical ones. The AXIS-Y Complete No-Stress Physical Sunscreen is a great example: it uses physical filters but is formulated to minimise white cast and feel comfortable on Indian skin.

Choosing by Skin Type

Oily or Acne-Prone Skin

Look for: Gel or fluid textures, non-comedogenic formulas, matte or satin finish

Avoid: Heavy creams, formulas with silicones that can clog pores

Our recommendation: ISNTREE Hyaluronic Acid Watery Sun Gel SPF 50 PA++++ — an ultra-lightweight gel that hydrates without greasiness, perfect for oily skin in humid climates. Also excellent: Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics SPF50+ PA++++ — a cult favourite with a skin-blurring, non-greasy finish.

Dry or Dehydrated Skin

Look for: Cream textures, hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides

Avoid: Alcohol-heavy formulas that can further dry out skin

Our recommendation: Mixsoon Centella Sun Cream SPF 50+ PA++++ — a nourishing cream formula with centella asiatica that hydrates and soothes while protecting. The Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Aqua-fresh Rice + B5 SPF50+ is another excellent option with added panthenol for deep hydration.

Combination Skin

Look for: Lightweight lotions or fluid textures that balance without over-drying or over-moisturising

Our recommendation: Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics SPF50+ PA++++ — a versatile formula that works beautifully for combination skin, leaving a natural, skin-like finish.

Sensitive or Reactive Skin

Look for: Fragrance-free, alcohol-free formulas with soothing ingredients like centella asiatica, panthenol, or allantoin

Avoid: Fragrances, essential oils, high concentrations of chemical filters

Our recommendation: Mixsoon Centella Sun Cream SPF 50+ PA++++ — the centella asiatica base makes this one of the most skin-friendly sunscreens available. Also consider the AXIS-Y Complete No-Stress Physical Sunscreen for a mineral option.

Hyperpigmentation-Prone Skin

Look for: High PA rating (PA++++), broad-spectrum protection, and bonus brightening ingredients

Our recommendation: Any SPF 50+ PA++++ formula, paired with a vitamin C or niacinamide serum in your routine. The Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum: Propolis + Niacinamide used under your sunscreen is a powerful combination for fading dark spots.

Common Sunscreen Mistakes to Avoid

  • Not using enough: Most people use 25% of the recommended amount. Use ½ teaspoon for face and neck.
  • Skipping reapplication: Sunscreen breaks down with UV exposure and sweat. Reapply every 2 hours outdoors.
  • Relying on SPF in makeup: The SPF in foundation or powder is never applied in sufficient quantity to provide real protection. Always use a dedicated sunscreen underneath.
  • Skipping on cloudy days: Up to 80% of UV rays penetrate cloud cover. Daily SPF is non-negotiable, rain or shine.
  • Stopping at the jawline: Apply sunscreen to your neck, ears, and the back of your hands too.
